What you will see
Laughing Bird Caye sits on a long shoal at the inner reef. The protected lagoon side is shallow and calm, with healthy elkhorn, brain, and staghorn coral. Common sightings include nurse sharks (resting on the sand), eagle rays, southern stingrays, parrotfish, sergeant majors, and the occasional spotted eagle ray.
The caye itself is a small palm-topped island roughly the size of a soccer field. Most trips break for lunch on the caye and a short walk before the second snorkel stop.
How to book
Three operators run regular Laughing Bird trips from Placencia: Splash Dive Center, Avadon Divers, and Sea Horse Dive Shop. All include the marine reserve entry fee ($10 USD), snorkel gear (mask, fins, snorkel), guided in-water drift, and lunch on the caye. Guide ratios are typically 1:6 to 1:8.
Book direct with the operator, not through a US-side broker; you save 15-20%. Day-of bookings are usually possible in low season; high season needs 24-48 hours notice.
What to bring
Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory in the marine reserve (chemical sunscreen is fined). Water shoes help on rocky entries. A rash guard or light long-sleeve protects you from the midday sun. A waterproof bag for your phone and a hat for the boat ride round out the kit.
Most operators provide a basic snorkel set; bringing your own mask if you have one improves the experience noticeably. Cameras are welcome — the visibility supports decent underwater shots.
Best time of year
December through May is the dry season with the most consistent water clarity (typically 60-100 ft visibility). June through October has occasional reduced visibility after storms, but mornings usually stay clean. The trades pick up by midday, so early departures give the best in-water experience.

Where to stay
The main pier is a 90-second walk from every MeMe’s Place unit. That matters when your boat call is 8:00am for an 8:30 departure. The Macaw 1BR fits couples; the 2BR villas fit families up to five; the Estate sleeps groups of up to twenty.
For other reef trips, our whale shark season write-up and fishing charters guide cover the other big Placencia water trips. The travel guide covers what to do on land.

FAQ
Is Laughing Bird Caye good for first-time snorkelers?
Yes. The lagoon side is shallow (3-15 ft), the water is calm, and the in-water guide keeps a close eye. Most operators do a 5-minute briefing before the first stop.
How is it different from Silk Caye or Gladden Spit?
Laughing Bird is closer (45-min boat ride vs 90+ minutes for Silk or Gladden), calmer, and friendlier to beginners. Silk Caye has more reef coverage. Gladden Spit is the whale shark site (Mar-Jun only).
Can kids go?
Yes. Operators usually set a minimum age of 5-6. Younger kids who can comfortably wear a mask have a strong trip; the water is shallow enough that flotation is easy to add.
Is the trip affected by rainy season?
Morning departures usually stay clean June-October. Afternoon squalls last 20 minutes and rarely cancel trips. Hurricane risk is real in September and October.
What is included in the trip price?
Marine reserve permit, snorkel gear, guide, lunch on the caye, drinking water, and the boat. Drinks (beer/cocktails) usually cost extra.
