When is whale shark season in Placencia

Whale sharks aggregate at Gladden Spit Marine Reserve every spring when cubera and dog snapper spawn there around the full moon. The whale sharks come for the spawn — millions of eggs released into the current. Peak sighting probability is the three to ten days following each full moon from late March through June.

April and May are the most reliable weeks. By late June the snapper spawns thin out and sightings drop sharply. July through February sightings are rare; do not book a Placencia trip in November expecting whale sharks.

Where to see them

Gladden Spit sits about 36 miles offshore from Placencia, at the edge of the barrier reef. It is a protected marine reserve, which means a permit is required (your tour operator handles it). The shark encounter is a snorkel, not a dive — the animals come to the surface to feed on spawn.

Boats run from Placencia main pier; the ride is 90 minutes each way through open water. Mornings are typically calmer, and the snapper spawn happens in the afternoon, so the schedule lines up.

How to book

Three operators run regular whale shark trips out of Placencia: Splash Dive Center, Avadon Divers, and Sea Horse Dive Shop. All include the marine reserve permit ($30 USD), snorkel gear, lunch, and a second reef stop on the way back. Pricing falls in the $250-$350 range; the higher end usually includes drinks and a guide-to-guest ratio of 1:6 or better.

Book 30-60 days ahead for peak weeks (the three days after April and May full moons sell out fastest). Last-minute bookings are sometimes possible if you are flexible on which lunar window you hit.

What to expect

The boat anchors over the spawning site. You snorkel above the bait ball at the surface; the whale sharks rise up from below to feed. Encounters last anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. There is no guarantee — these are wild animals — but the odds during peak weeks are favorable, and trips that miss whale sharks usually still see snapper spawns, eagle rays, and a healthy reef.

Bring an underwater camera if you have one. Reef-safe sunscreen is mandatory in the marine reserve.

Where to stay

The main pier is a 90-second walk from every MeMe’s Place unit on the Sidewalk. That matters when your boat call is 7:45am for an 8:30 departure. The Macaw 1BR fits two; the 2BR villas fit four; the Estate sleeps groups of up to 20.

FAQ

Can you see whale sharks year-round in Placencia?

No. The aggregation at Gladden Spit is tied to the snapper spawn, which happens March through June. Off-season sightings are rare and unreliable.

Do I need to be a certified diver?

No. The whale shark experience is a surface snorkel. Basic swimming ability and comfort in open water are required.

What if we go and do not see one?

Most operators do not refund a missed trip but will discount a return run if your schedule allows. During peak weeks the hit rate is high; off-peak is a gamble.

Is the trip suitable for kids?

The 90-minute boat ride in open water is the limiting factor. Kids who can handle that and snorkel comfortably without a guide hand-held usually have a strong trip. Operators generally set a minimum age of 8.

How rough is the open-water ride?

Conditions vary. Calmer days are common in April-May mornings. By late June the trades pick up and the ride can be bumpy. Take seasickness meds if you are prone.
